If there is an ultimate survivor in Manila Second Runner Up, it should be given to Luneta Hotel (the ultimate survivor is of course San Agustin). It was built in 1918 and is the sole remaining French Styled building in Manila, it was saved from the war and for many decades from the war, it has been left to decay: waiting for either humiliation by bulldozer or reincarnation by willing developer. Luckily it survived the threats of bulldozer and it set again to be used as a boutique hotel. Unlike other buildings in Manila that was already demolished, it has a weapon that they do not have, protection from the National Historical Institute.

It’s neighbor, the Shellbourne (now a boxy building by Eton), has been the setting of one of the most comedic moments of Manila’s Political History. The Battle of Luneta between Arsenio Lacson and Oscar Castelo.
